In which type of area can category 1 CSPs be prepared?

Category 1 Compounded Sterile Preparations (CSPs) are those that are typically low-risk and can be prepared using a segregated compounding area (SCA). An SCA is designated specifically for the compounding of sterile preparations that do not require a controlled environment typical of more complex compounding activities.

In an SCA, the environmental conditions are less stringent than in a cleanroom suite. It is sufficient for performing low-risk preparations due to the lower likelihood of contamination, as long as the area is maintained appropriately and the compounding process adheres to good aseptic practices. The SCA should have proper ventilation, cleanliness, and equipment suitable for preparing these types of CSPs.

In contrast, although a Primary Engineering Control (PEC) and a Laminar Airflow Workbench (LAFW) are critical components for maintaining an aseptic environment, they do not represent areas where CSPs are prepared independently. The cleanroom suite offers a controlled environment suitable for higher-risk preparations but isn't necessary for category 1 CSPs, which can be effectively compounded in an SCA. Thus, an SCA is appropriate and sufficient for the preparation of category 1 CSPs.
